Anagram Solver: find every word and phrase hiding in your letters
Type your letters or a whole phrase and this free anagram solver instantly lists every exact anagram that uses all of them, two-word phrase anagrams (like DORMITORY → DIRTY ROOM) and every shorter word you can make, grouped by length. Add a ? for a letter you don't know.
Solving one by hand? Sort the letters, split vowels from consonants, pull out endings like -ING or -ED and pairs like TH or CH, then rebuild around the rarest letter. See the 7-step method below.

How to solve anagrams by hand, step by step
Good anagram solvers don't shuffle letters at random. They shrink the problem with a few reliable patterns. Use these seven steps on any scramble, from a two-word crossword clue to a daily word puzzle.
Count and sort the letters
Write the letters in alphabetical order and note duplicates. LISTEN becomes E I L N S T. Sorting breaks the grip of the original spelling, and knowing you have two O's or two R's rules out most wrong guesses.
Split vowels from consonants
Put the vowels on one line and the consonants on another. Most English words alternate between the two, so the ratio tells you what shape the answer has: many consonants suggests blends like STR or CH; many vowels suggests pairs like EA, OU or IE.
Pull out common endings and beginnings
Look for suffixes such as -ING, -ED, -ER, -EST, -LY and -TION, and prefixes such as RE-, UN-, IN- and DE-. Setting a chunk aside shrinks the problem: with -ING removed from nine letters, you only have six left to arrange.
Find consonant pairs
Spot letters that like to sit together: TH, CH, SH, PH, WH, CK, NG, ST and QU (Q is almost always followed by U). Treat each pair as a single tile when you rearrange.
Anchor the rare letters
Place hard letters like J, Q, X, Z, K, V or W first, because they have the fewest legal positions. Once the awkward letter is fixed, the common letters usually fall into place around it.
Write the letters in a circle
Arrange the letters randomly around a circle and read around it from different starting points. This stops you reading them in one fixed order and helps new words pop out, a trick crossword solvers have used for decades.
Test candidates and check letter by letter
Say likely words out loud, then tick off every letter to make sure each is used exactly once. For phrase anagrams, find one word you are confident about, cross out its letters, and solve the leftovers as a smaller anagram.

How this anagram solver works
The solver checks your letters against the same word list that powers the WordFren app: roughly 296,000 words that are valid in word games. Everyday words are listed first, then standard dictionary words, and rare Scrabble-only words are hidden unless you tick Include rare & Scrabble-only words. Phrase anagrams pair two real words that together use every letter exactly once, ranked so the most natural combinations come first.
For the best practice, try the scramble yourself first, then use the solver to check your answers and learn the words you missed. That feedback loop is what makes people faster at anagrams.
